The Skirrid Inn

Image
Nestled into the Brecon Beacons lies The Skirrid Inn a pub with a history dating back over 900 years and if the walls could talk they would be full of tales of death, murder and blood. The pub it's self is a beautiful look structure in a quiet area a few miles outside of Abergavenny. It's thick walls and roaring fireplaces and the hum of locals and holiday makers talking and laughing bely its horrific history. As would be expected from a building that has seen so much history and bloodshed rumours of hauntings and poltergeist activity abound. To placate some of these sprits and to ensure the patrons at the Skirrid Inn have a pleasant stay the landlord is said to put out the 'Devils Cup' or 'pwca cup' each night. The cup is full of ale and placed out each night to appease the spirits or maybe the Devil himself as an offering of good will and the next day some of the ale has gone and the spirits leave the pub alone for another night. This ritual has been maintaine

The Devil's Footprints

Image
On a cold Snowy February 1855 a strange event occurred through both East and South Devon that is still often mentioned to this day, that event would become known as the Devil's footprints. After a night of heavy snowfall the areas around Exe Estuary woke to a strange sight, a series of hoof like foot prints could be seen they stretched for between some 40-100 miles crossing gardens and roof tops. The explanation for this if lore is to believed is that the residents of East and South Devon were visited by the devil that wintery night as he wandered through the county plotting some nefarious deeds no doubt and all that was left as the witness were his cloven hoof marks.   The hoof prints were traced over haystacks, through walls and even roofs this was certainly not the works of the local wildlife unless deer and horses can climb and pass through solid objects. The Times described the prints as  the Times the footprints were described as:  "more like that of a biped than a qua

The Shag Harbour Incident

Image
On October 4th 1967 a remarkable event took place in which the tiny an relatively unknow fishing village of Shag Harbour and its residents would be put on the world map once and for all. The incident drew enough attention to be investigated by both the civilian RCMP and Coast guard and military Canadian navy and air force. The story is as follows. Multiple residents of the tiny fishing community of Shag Harbour began to notice strange orange lights in the sky in the evening of the 4th (approx. 11.20pm Atlantic Daylight Time) this was reported by multiple witnesses who generally believed there were four noticeable lights. The lights were flashing in sequence and then without warning dived at a steep angle towards the waters surface. However the lights did not crash in to the water but instead hovered above the waters surface approximately half a mile off shore. At first believing they may have witnessed a plane crash out at sea RCMP Constable Ron O'Brien was contacted by Laurie Wi

Beebe's Abyssal Fish

Image
Between 1930 and 1934 naturalist William Beebe reported on a number of amazing discoveries he and inventor Otis Barton had made in Barton's Bathysphere. These discoveries were made deep of the Bermuda coast and they reported many new undocumented fish and see creatures these have never since been found outside of these expeditions and are to this day still not officially recognised by science.  photo from William Beebe, (William Beebe onthe left and Otis Barton on the right) Nat Geo Image Collection. The Bathysphere was an interesting piece of technology, it was in essence a spherical unpowered deep sea submersible that was lowered in to the ocean and was capable of depths of  over 3,000ft (nearly 1km). A record that stood for 15 years. The Bathysphere made it possible for the naturalist to observe the deep sea creatures in there natural environment. This was as monumental moment as this was the first time this had been able to happen.  On these dives Beebe described at least 5 n

Black Dogs and Where to Find them

Image
The UK has a very long history with spectral dogs. Known by many names be it devil dogs, he'll hounds, shucks, barghest, black dogs or dogs of the wild hunt. Nearly every country has their own for some they are a portent of imminent doom, for others they are a demonic force sent to scare and test their faith, some believe that the spirit of an evil person in life can come back as a spectral hound and to others they are a natural part of the psychic landscape of this very old land. There are tails from hundreds of years ago to the present and the descriptions are remarkably similar.  A creature known as 'Hairy Jack' a large black spectral dog was said by locals to haunt the roads and by-ways of Lincolnshire. Although mostly a passive observer it would on occasion attempt to attack passers-by.   The barghest as it is known in northern parts of England is described as you may think a hell-hound from a horror movie would look. Very large with dark black fur, large sharp teeth a

The phantom crash

Image
On December 11th 2002 the Surrey police would starting their day much the same as any other however it would soon become a strange a bizarre day in their history one that would be reported widely in the media and interest in the incident would spark the curiosity of ghost hunters and forteans. The police received a call from a concerned member of the public reporting that they had just witnessed a car leaving the dual carriage way heading southbound to Guildford on the A3 and heading in to a ditch. The police were duly sent to investigate to reported crash site but despite the initial search were unable to find any evidence of a crash. However on a further search of the area a police officer located a crashed vehicle a few yards from the initial report of the accident. This was not a recent crash however the car was covered in undergrowth and the decomposing body of the driver was found inside (some reports state found 'near by' while others report that just a skeleton was foun

The Beast of Gévaudan

Image
The now legendary account of the Beast of Gévaudan is a fascinating tale set in the province of Gévaudan in France. The incident or incidents took place from 1764 to 1767 and described a possible werewolf, a very large wolf or unknown cryptid attacks. The contemporary accounts taken at the time descibe a very large animal or animals with large teeth and tails and wolf or dog like or a wolf/dog hybrid type animal. It had pointed ears and was able to take long strides with a thin face and a broad chest. It was brown in colour with black stripes or streaks on its back and may have had a white heart shap on its stomach. It had a notably longer tail than that of a wolf with a tuft of fur on the end. This has one of the largest deaths associated with an unknown animal attack on humans with estimates ranging from 60 to 500 deaths of men, women and children and 30 to 49 injuries with reportedly many victims partially eaten. The attacks covered some 50 square miles.  Gévaudan no longer exists
