Farmer believes puma responsible for death of sheep

Image
A North Wales farmer has told the local press that he has lost 10 sheep since July from what he believes is a puma stalking his farm animals. He states that they are killed by a single distinctive bite to the neck and if the carcass is left more is taken away (presumably eaten by the same animal) over the next few days. The attacks were in the Beddgelert area of North Wales near Snowdonia. The exact location has been withheld due to fears hunters may try to go after the animal. The farmer has also said that a neighbour has had a ram killed and another neighbour (or possibly the same one as it us not stated) saw a large cat (about three times the size of a domestic cat) light brown in colour jump over a wall back in August.  This is not the first time this area of Wales has been subject to suspected big cat attacks as in 2015 the same area of Nantmor and Beddgelert. Where more sheep had been were lost (assume killed) and a witness reported seeing a mother puma with cubs! Area where a pu

Monolith found in the Utah Dessert

Image
A helicopter crew has found a large metal monolith in the middle of the Utah dessert. As yet no one has come forward to claim responsibility or to explain the reason for it being put there. The most likely explanation is an art instalation but one not granted by the federal government which would be needed as it is federal land. Other more outlandish suggestions are some kind of alien device or a demonic doorway.  Whatever it turns out to be it's nice to know there's still a little bit of strange out there. The Owlman of Mawnan

Image
On the 17th April 1976 over St. Mawnan and St. Stephens church two young girls would see a creature that terrified them and would be the start of a still enduring mystery that would be named the Owlman of Mawnan. A very interesting story indeed and covered in detail by Jonathan Downes in his fantastic book The Owlman and Others.  Despite the obvious problems associated with all the testimonies from this case being recounted by one individual investigator especially one who is a known trickster (Tony 'Doc' Sheils). It makes for a great piece of local folklore. Outside of this point in time there is very limited historical lore for these sightings apart from some local news story from the 1920s. This makes me err on the side of an exotic escaped bird of prey or a large bird that had gotten lost. Interest was raised again recently when a YouTube video emerged purporting to be of the Owlman. However the video is of bad quality and at best shows a humanoid shap which does not really

Other Werewolf and Dogman sightings

Image
Following on from our podcast on Welsh werewolf sightings I thought I would cover a few more reports that we didn't talk about. There have been and still are numerous accounts of large wolves or dogmen in and around Wales and its boarder with England. These include the dogman of Drakelow Tunnels, which has had many paranormal reported sightings including that of a hairy dogman who witnesses claim watches them. The Forest of Dean has had sightings of water has been reported as a large canine. Another report from the same area states that a lage wolf was seen by a witness. A lage black bipedal wolf like creates witnessed by a car driver in or around Stowford quarry. A black (shadowy) humanoid creature was seen running on all fours in the Black mountains in Wales. The beast of Rhayader was a possible large wolf type creature suspected of killing livestock in the late 1980s. These are just a few sightings from Wales and the surrounding area over the years and there are many more report

The A23 the most haunted road in Britain?

Image
The A23 in Sussex is a very old road even before it was designated as such it has long been a connection road from the towns and villages on the south coast to the main hub of industry in London. This made it a favorite spot for highwaymen of the 17th Century to hide in wait for some unsuspecting traveller to come across their path and be lightened of their load if not their life.  Not surprisingly for such an ancient travel way there are many legends and stories told about the ghosts that haunt this stretch of road. These include black shadows darting across the road in front of unsuspecting drivers, pale figures standing at the side of the road, a ghost of a man in cricket whites and a girl in a coat with out hands or feet and even a spectral dog making a run from one side to the other. Reports of ghostly encounters have been noted from Brighton to Croydon and it seems that there isn't an area of the road that hasn't seen its share of death at one time or another.  In one e

The Views Wood Piper

Image
This was a story told to us directly from a witness many years ago. Located on the outskirts of the small town of Uckfield in East Sussex UK there lies a wood. In this wood it is said that you can sometimes hear the sound of bagpipes being played. If you look a little further, there, in the clearing near the middle of the wood you might find yourself looking at a tiny man playing the bagpipes as loud as he can. He is described as maybe 2 feet tall and wearing bright coloured clothing. If you look away the sound will stop and he will be gone. This was recounted to us by a friend who saw this themselves. We cannot find any lore or mention of this or anything similar happening in or around these woods or any woods in fact and although we were told that there were other sightings by dog walkers and the like it seems to be a singular event.  We believe this was recounted to us in good faith and the witness truly believes the odd sight that they saw on more than one occasion but what was it

The Brede Ogre

Image
If you happen to find yourself in the small East Sussex village of Brede make sure you take a trip to the Church of St. George of Brede which was built at the end of the 12th Century. Here you will find the tomb of Sir Goddard Oxenbridge of Brede, or as he is locally known the Ogre or Giant of Brede (Died 10th February 1531). Local legend has it that when he was alive he stood 7ft. tall and feasted on the flesh of children every night. It was said that not a sword, spear or arrow could hurt him but that the local villagers eventually succeeded in making him drunk enough that they were able to saw him in half. In reality he was said to be a pious and generous man who was almost certainly not 7ft tall. It is believed that there are a couple of explanations as to why this story of Sir Goddard was made up. He was a Catholic during a time in British history when admitting such would at best end with you being a hated individual. The other possible explanation is that Brede Place was at some

Old Martha

Image
Rumour has it that there used to be an lady who lived in a Hovel in the village of Plumpton East Sussex. She was known as Old Martha and it was excepted by all that knew her she was a witch capable of both good and evil. She was believed to be over 100 years old. Yet despite her age she would walk for miles dancing and singing and wearing outlandish clothes. She could easily climb large hills that would have tested accomplished walkers easily covering 20 - 30 miles a day all the while collecting flowers and herbs as she went. She was said to be able to run as fast backwards as most could run forwards and those that knew her or knew of her would not speak to her in fear of being cursed should they say the wrong thing. She was said to be able to enchant horses of wagon drivers to stop dead in their tracks and refuse to move if the driver refused to pay the toll for travelling passed her house, and would only be able to go again once the toll was paid. The Ghost of Nan Tuck

Image
So local legend goes in the early 1800s a woman named Nan Tuck who was living in either the small village of Maresfield or Buxted in what is now East Sussex was accused of killing her husband she was more specifically accused bewitching him and other men but most likely she poisoned him. Upon hearing of his death the locals took it upon themselves to accused her of being a witch and chased her out of the village. They chased her to the local church where she banged on the church door asking for protection from the mob. The local vicar either was not there or refused her entry and so poor Nan Tuck ran into the nearby woods in the hope to evade her chasers. She was never seen again and depending on who you believe she either hung herself instead of being caught or was lynched by the mob and hung form a large tree in the wood. It is said that the tree from where she hung has dead land around it where the grass never grows and on some nights it is said you can hear the sound of someone run
