The Skirrid Inn

Nestled into the Brecon Beacons lies The Skirrid Inn a pub with a history dating back over 900 years and if the walls could talk they would be full of tales of death, murder and blood. The pub it's self is a beautiful look structure in a quiet area a few miles outside of Abergavenny. It's thick walls and roaring fireplaces and the hum of locals and holiday makers talking and laughing bely its horrific history.

As would be expected from a building that has seen so much history and bloodshed rumours of hauntings and poltergeist activity abound. To placate some of these sprits and to ensure the patrons at the Skirrid Inn have a pleasant stay the landlord is said to put out the 'Devils Cup' or 'pwca cup' each night. The cup is full of ale and placed out each night to appease the spirits or maybe the Devil himself as an offering of good will and the next day some of the ale has gone and the spirits leave the pub alone for another night. This ritual has been maintained for many, many years with successive landlords following the same routine. It is not clear what may happen if this task is not repeated nightly maybe the pub will fall on hard times, maybe the spirits will become restless and start to pester the patrons maybe worse!

In the 17th Century George Jeffreys known as the 'Hanging Judge' was said to have hung over 180 people in the Pub. The Judge is still said to walk the top floors of the pub looking for further persons to punish and his footsteps can be heard pacing up and down. Fanny Price a former employee at the Skirrid Inn is said to have never really left after her passing from consumption and her lavender perfume can be smelt and the rustling of her dress can still be heard. She seems to favour room 3 if you want to stay the night and bring some jewellery she has a penchant for rearranging it while you sleep. John Crowther a sheep rustler who is said to have been the last person hung at the Pub has been seen on multiple occasions as well as the spirit of  Father Henry Vaughn a local clergyman. The pub really seems to be a mecca for all things paranormal.

There are reports of doors slamming by themselves, glasses would be smashed in the kitchen, guests have complained of being felt like they are being strangled, one guest came running down the stairs after trying to take a bath terrified that someone had tried to hold her head under water while she bathed. To top it off there are also reports of a white lady and a sighting of soldiers in the courtyard.

With all this activity it is not surprising that this most haunted pub has featured on a 'Most Haunted' TV show as well as welcomed many a ghost hunter to stay..... ........maybe forever!
